February 25, 2012.
The first day that I didn’t nurse bug. I wrote a number of posts about weaning her last year (see some here, here and here), and going back and looking at them again brought new tears to my eyes.
I look at my little girl, who now really looks so much like a little girl, and it breaks my heart just a little that we weaned when we did, for the reasons we did. Infertility and wanting another baby.
Some of my worries back then didn’t come true. I was so worried that we’d wean and then never get pregnant and I’d regret it.
I don’t regret weaning – because I look at the beautiful face of my smiling little boy and know that HE wouldn’t be here if it weren’t for weaning when we did. That doesn’t mean that the ache doesn’t come back sometimes.
One of my other worries that I don’t believe I really wrote too much about was that I was afraid that my nursing relationship with a new baby wouldn’t be the same.
And it’s not.
Goose isn’t known to comfort nurse in the same way that Bug did. For Bug, I was her EVERYTHING. If anything bothered her she wanted to nurse. If she couldn’t settle down she wanted to nurse. If she was tired, cranky, happy, hurt, sad, ill, she wanted to nurse. She loved our nursing relationship as much as I did. In the long run weaning that last daily session was easier with her than I expected, but she held on to my boobs (literally and figuratively) for months and months afterwards. Even when she went through her distracted stage she was still all about the nursing relationship. It was filled with sweet sweet moments of just her and I, loving each other as a mama and daughter were meant to in the early years.
Goose isn’t like that. He does some level of comfort nursing, but not like she did. I can’t keep him focused sometimes long enough to get a letdown. In the morning he’s become so accustomed to taking a bottle that he isn’t interested in me if I’m around when he gets up during the week (weekends he will eventually nurse). In the deep pit of my stomach I’m so afraid that he’ll self-wean earlier than I want him to. I want so badly for him to nurse until at least 2 because of the bond it creates. Because of the good that I know it does for him. (and the ease and price of it ain’t half bad either!)
He is rougher than she was. Yeah, she got those claws in my skin sometimes, but not bad (or maybe I’m just remembering the good part?). He is so rough and tumble, he will grip both sides of my boob sometimes and squeeze it in his tiny little fists. I’ll come out red and marked up. Sometimes with scratches.
But the other night I was nursing him before bed, and I realized in some ways it’s not so different.
The relationship. In many ways it is similar.
I choose to take that step back and really pay attention, recognizing that he has a lot more going on than she did with a toddler running around to keep his attention.
As I felt the weight of him curled up against me, the rest of his hands on me (yes, he was being gentle) the way he eagerly drinks and the way his sweet little eyes went half closed reminded me of all those sweet moments with her.
I took the step back and reclaimed the sweet moments with him right then and there. I watched him break away for a moment and take a deep breath, only to go back to nursing. That same soft deep pull of the nipple as he gets one of the best things that I can give him. The way his warm body stayed so close to mine.
And I realized that I very well may be wrong. That this relationship may have a lot more time in it yet. That our sweet moments are still there, hanging in tight, and it makes me glad (with a little sadness around it) that I weaned Bug when I did, so that I could have this relationship with Goose.
And I thought that about 4 more times overnight as he woke up (teething) and wanted nothing but mama to nurse him through.
And, nursing Goose has taught me something about nursing Bug. Turns out she had a HORRIBLE latch and that’s why my nipples were always sore (nipple cream was used up until the last day I nursed!). Goose? He may be rough and tumble, but that boy has an AMAZING latch and the girls only get tender when AF is near. Nipple cream? I’m sure I have some in the medicine cabinet… somewhere :-)
My world as it revolves around my miracle daughter and son, the joys and sorrows of being a pilot's wife, and living and parenting in the aftermath of infertility. We are living the dream.

Well, it's Monday
And I do have to say, that my weekend of working on getting Bug to fall asleep on her own only went somewhat stressfully. Is that a word? It is now!
Well, I've been nursing Bug to sleep since she was born. It has not been an issue until recently. Between being sick and teething, she forgot how to self soothe. This was not good. I dealt with it for over 2 months, and it was very tiring. Then it seemed to carry on, for no good reason. So, starting on Friday, I started to switch up her bed time routine. Nurse first, then bath (if it's bath night), baby massage, medicine, story and cuddle time. Then, put her in bed drowsy, but awake. Now, we've built 10 months of a routine, so I recognize it'll take a bit to change it. So, when I put her in the crib I give her a lovey, and pat her butt and sing to her. I'm not a CIO mama. (not that I've never let her CIO when I just needed a minute, after all, I'm only human). Friday she wanted to hold onto my arm instead of the lovey, but by last night it was almost OK for me to take my arm away.... Almost. She still kinda had a hold on it. But it's going quicker, and even better than that, she seems to be handling her during the night waking better (oh boy, I hope I'm not jinxing myself). Now, it's not that she hasn't awakened, it's just that I go to her door and sing to her if she ramps up to upset. I don't nurse her until 4ish if she wakes up around then. Like I said, baby steps. I wake up hungry in the middle of the night, so I'm sure she might too. So, no point to totally night wean her until she is ready to do so.
Work today was a bust. We had a big storm come through Saturday night (I mean, big, the thunder that was rolling every minute or so set off the baby monitor!!!), and it somehow kicked out our connection with the server back at corporate. Needless to say we were down until about noon, so this afternoon was tough to get through.... I hate days that start out like that.
On a good note, our house back home is rented! I almost posted a vent post on Friday about it, but decided to cool down first. Let's just say I'm not at ALL impressed with our management company. We just felt like they didn't keep us in the loop at all. We happened to bring this renter to them, and we found out that it was rented out by this RENTER calling us. Yep, the renter, not the management company. I ended up calling them, and we got the lease late Friday. K actually called them back because I didn't even think about the utilities being switched out, so they got a piece of mind from him when he called them back. He flat out told them that he was not happy with their service, and if nothing changes then in a year we'll be leaving. Felt good.
Ahhhh, so now I can really actually save a little cash for IVF. That makes me happy, and nervous all in the same. I keep putting off calling these couple of RE offices to set up consults, I think I'm scared to take that first step. Two reasons really, one because once you take that step, it's like jumping off a building - there's no going back. Once we meet with them everything will start rolling and before I know it I'll be a human pincushion again. (which, by the way, I'll have to actually learn to give myself the shots this time around - all the other cycle's K gave them to me! But, that was before he was on the road so much!!!).
I recently started following a blog that has been out there for a bit (Infertile Myrtle), and she recently cancelled an IUI because she realized that she just wasn't ready to parent a second child. I think I feel that fear a little bit, and that's another reason I haven't made the call yet. It's so tough with just one baby, financially and emotionally, am I really sure that I'm ready for number 2? With K being gone more than half the month, I'll be dealing with two young one's all by myself.
We had agreed to start around Bug's first birthday because we recognize new RE means they have to learn us all over again. The way I respond to meds leads us to believe that it could possibly take a few cycle's before we get it right and make it to an ER and ET. So, it could be a year! Then the 40 weeks of pregnancy, and the kiddos would be about 3 years apart. We don't want them anymore than that. Which makes methink KNOW that I can handle 2 young 'uns.
I think the biggest fear is that it would actually work the first time and we would end up with twins or something. THAT's what scares me the most. Not just 2 young 'uns, but what if we get multiples? Can I really handle it?
I know, I know, I gotta talk to K about it. I will, I promise, just not when he's on the road.
Off to pick up Bug from daycare.

Budget
I'm a little stressed. We move at the end of this month to our new rental house, which is about 2x the rent we are currently paying. We don't have any renters in our house back home yet. We still owe the hospital for our delivery in July (long story, but it was the hospitals fault, they basically forgot about our account, and who were we to complain? Stupid me had to bring it back up to them... trying to do the right thing.... ugh), so we are going to start payments to them soon. K's newest student loans are going to come back soon for payment. And now we want to start fertility treatments again, specifically expensive IVF.
Ugh.
I know we will pull through, I'm just feeling a little crazed about it right now. We are really good with our money, but it's hard when the budget says you won't be saving much of anything to speak of. This will change a little once we get renters in the house, which we are hoping will be soon. But the problem is the first two months of rent will pretty much go to the management company, so we won't see much until month 3.
Argh. Well, I'm a good budgeter/saver, and I know this so I know I can make it happen, but that doesn't help the stress level. Especially since I can't control how much K spends when he's travelling.
On a good note, I called the Ped about Bug and her horrible sleeping the other day, and he thought it might be because we were trying to wean her off her reflux meds. So, I upped the nighttime dosage and went back to giving her her morning dosage, and guess what? The last two nights she has slept SOOOOO much better!!! Woo Hoo!
Which means Mama has slept better, which makes for a happy mama, and a healthier Starbucks budget :-)

Breastfeeding, Crawling, and everything in between
10 months. I'm so proud that we've made it this far! I struggled so much in the beginning, as I'm sure most BF'ing mama's can relate to. I remember one night when Bug wasn't even a week old yet. She was hungry, and crying. She couldn't hardly stay awake to latch (jaundice). I was engorged and sore. I was crying. K looked at me and told me that it was OK if I wanted to stop. He would understand and not think less of me if I did. All that did?
It reinforced that I would make it through. And we did. Breastfeeding now for 10 months. We have dealt with thrush (numerous times), clogged ducts (a few times), engorgement, nipple bruising, and just plain tenderness. We have been lucky to not deal with some of the worst things that mama's deal with. I am thankful for that.
So at this beautiful 10 month mark, only 2 months away from my third goal (first was just doing it, second was 6 months), I reflect on the beauty of this relationship. I reflect on the love of this relationship. And I reflect on the sometimes absurdity on this relationship.
Every night when I get Bug ready for bed, I will have her sitting up while I start to get her dressed, and she'll bury her head in my cleavage. I think she sometimes is in there motor boating! She will THROW her head into my chest, to the point where you can hear the THUNK. Wow, I think she likes to breastfeed.
This morning I couldn't help but laugh. We had already nursed for the day, and I had just finished pumping her fresh bottles for daycare. I hadn't gotten the girls put away and she had crawled over to me (oh yeah, that's new too.... more about that later), climbed into my lap, and latched on. Mind you, it had only been about 20 minutes since she fully nursed, and well, there wasn't anything in there. But, she thought she'd give it the old college try. So she would stop nursing, look up at me expectantly, smile, and latch back on. All I could do was laugh.
Oh yes, weaning should be SO much fun!!
I have given up telling stories like these to my coworkers (yes, we are an open group), because they keep harassing me to 'get her off the boob.' Sorry people, that may have been right for you, but it's not for me. A-breastfeeding we shall remain.
Crawling: So, she's been taking a few crawling 'steps' over the last handful of days, but then she will stop, sit back on her butt, and look around like 'what the heck was that?' It's quite amusing if I do say so myself. So on Wednesday I went to DC to nurse her at lunch and they said that was what she was doing there too. K picked her up at the end of the day and she crawled across the room to get to him! Apparently she had been moving all over the room all afternoon.
Humph.
So, I went out to dinner with my boss that night and therefore didn't get to see it. Yesterday when I went to nurse her at lunch she just laid there and waited for me to pick her up. So I said to her 'what, you'll crawl for dada but not mama?' Then when K picked her up yesterday afternoon, she crawled across the room to him again.
Humph.
This is all on the tail of her babble finally turning into 'talking,' and of course, that includes a lot of dadadadadada and absolutely NO mamamama.
I see where this is going. Freud is at work in her head. She's already learning to love and want to marry her dada. I thought that was supposed to wait until she was at least a little older?!
I'm in trouble. She's already chasing one of the boys at DC around during the day to give him open mouth kisses. OH boy.
Tooth number 2 is SO close, and thank God, because I could really really use some sleep. Like, a lot of it. I get goofy when I'm really tired, and suffice it to say, K has suggested I get coffee before work on a number of occasions this week, due to my extreme level of goofiness. He's been getting serenaded at 7 in the morning with songs like the Bear Song (come on, you know you know it... the other day, I met a bear, up in the woods, oh way up there.....)
Ha, now you can have it stuck in your head too. You're welcome.

Tough Weekend
K is gone 16 - 20 days a month. So for this month, this was weekend number 2. Luckily he'll be home this Friday night.
So, why was my weekend tough? First of all, it was just one of those weekends. I was tired and a little moody. Maybe this is my body 'cycling' even though I still haven't started my PPAF.
The sleep issue's started a couple of weeks ago. With Bug being sick, she just wasn't sleeping well. Then it carried over after she got better. Back to waking up anywhere from 2 to 4 times a night, and it would be a lot of her tears when she did wake. I would try everything, and the only way to get her back down was to nurse her.
So, then last week she started eating less and less solids. She typically loves her solids! But she would take a bite or two then clamp her mouth shut tight and refuse. Then crying would happen if I tried too hard to get her to eat them.
So, Friday night, poor Bug hardly slept. So, Saturday morning started out early, and with me being exhausted to begin with. She refused to eat ANY solids, and was just cranky in general. At naptime she refused to go into her crib. To the tune of screaming bloody murder ~ I can't believe no one called the cops it was so loud and angry! This would even happen after I got her to sleep and then put her in the crib. Finally, I just held her so that she would get a nap (after 30 or so mins of trying, and realizing that if I tried any longer she would decide that she wasn't gonna sleep anymore). Same thing happened for the second nap of the day. Lunch and dinner she again refused solids. During all this time she wanted to nurse still, which is good.
By the time Saturday evening rolled around, after we went to mass, I was talking to K and was just an emotional wreck. I don't have any friends really where I live as I haven't really had much of an opportunity to meet people after we moved. So that ended up playing into everything and I ended up in tears. K, who is the best hubby either, proceeded to get ahold of my best friend back home, C, and had her call me. We talked for quite a long time, and I felt so much better afterwards. It's just so tough when I'm tired and could use 30 mins of me time and K is gone, you know?
I don't want to complain, I wouldn't trade this for the world, and sometimes I feel bad when I let it get to me, after all we went through to get our miracle. But I recognize that when you are in serious need of some sleep and me time, it can get a little overwhelming, and I think that's just what happened this weekend.
Add in that we are trying to get our house back home rented out, and in the meantime find a house here to rent and get out of an apartment. The apartment was good at the time, but we need more space and a backyard for the dog. So I'm trying to look on the weekends when K is gone because we only have until the end of June. So, add in just one more stressor LOL.
Sunday was a duplicate of Saturday. Up real early, didn't want to nap, didn't want to eat solids, etc. Cranky. Last night she was up every 2 hours. Yep, my almost 9 month old decided it was time to be up every 2 hours again. Then, since she was so tired, she decided to sleep in a little bit, til about 6:30, of course, on a day that I can't sleep in because I had to get ready for work!!
Sigh. That's just how it goes somedays. My mom is coming to visit us this weekend, which will be nice. She wasn't going to come since K will be home, but this Thursday is my bday, and K and I thought having her here would allow us to go out and have a nice dinner, just the two of us. Plus, we are in SERIOUS need of a new car, so she can go with us and watch Bug while we test drive. Put it this way - when I bought this car I just KNEW that I would never be blessed with a baby. So, I bought a 2 door, Honda Civic SI. Fun car, I love it. But, it's 2 doors, and TINY. So, I am starting to struggle with back aches, and tennis elbow/carpal tunnel or something like pains in my arms from the way I have to twist and turn to get her in the car. Which also means I still carry her in her heavy car seat, because otherwise I would have to put the car seat on the ground next to the car to put her in it, then put it back in the car. Really, just not an ideal situation. But, we finished our taxes yesterday and thankfully now will have a down payment!!
Well, gotta get back to work now. Missing my Bug and can't wait to get home to see my crankster, so the quicker I can get stuff done the quicker I can get outta here!
